Fantasy football sleeper lists aren’t what they used to be. Every list of ’sleepers’ that I have looked at seem to be known commodities that are no longer sleepers. Either way, if you’re looking for a list of actual fantasy sleepers – people who won’t be drafted in most fantasy drafts – look no further.
1. Peyton Hillis – Hillis may be a fullback, but don’t underestimate how valuable of a player he could be this season. Knowshon Moreno’s availability for the season opener is in question and Hillis has a chance to receive a handful of carries in his stead. Corell Buckhalter currently sits atop Hillis on the depth chart, but the new coaching staff likes what they see in Hillis. Even when Moreno returns to health, Hillis should receive a few carries each game as well as goal line opportunities. He was a useful fantasy option at the end of last season and could be useful once again this season.
2. Gartrell Johnson – LaDanian Tomlinson is no longer in his prime and is showing signs of slowing down. Gartrell Johnson is one LT injury away from receiving significant playing time. Also, with Darren Sproles being more of a complimentary back, Johnson could see a decent amount of playing time, regardless of Tomlinson’s health. Johnson could also steal a few touchdowns away from Tomlinson and is worth keeping an eye on once the regular season starts. If Tomlinson gets injured, make sure to grab him before the other people can.
3. David Clowney – With 2 touchdowns in 2 preseason games, Clowney could be on the fast track to win the starting job opposite Jerricho Cotchery. He has displayed big play ability throughout his short career and will look to build on his preseason success during the regular season. He needs to work on his consistency if he hopes to become a better fantasy option, though.
4. Patrick Crayton – Crayton isn’t a no name player like some others on this list, but he still doesn’t get the fantasy recognition he deserves. Now the no. 2 receiver in a pass happy Cowboys offense, Crayton could develop into a useful fantasy option. He’s a sure handed receiver who has been productive in the past and should become a good fantasy option. If Roy Williams’ injury lingers, Crayton could find himself as the top receiver in Dallas for a couple games. He’s well worth drafting in the late rounds and is worth even more in PPR leagues.
5. Jerheme Urban – Sure, he may only be the 4th receiver, but Urban is a tall target for Kurt Warner who has the ability to put up good numbers. He finished last season with 448 yards and 4 touchdowns but should improve on those numbers this season. The Cardinals will air the ball out frequently and Urban is slowly developing into one of Warner’s favorite targets. Also keep in mind that if Anquan Boldin is traded, Urban benefits more than anyone else and immediately becomes a solid fantasy option.
